Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism, Aspergers and other Pervasive Developmental Disorders (Rett’s Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder NOS) are found on the Autism Spectrum (ASD).  ASD is a broad term used to refer to a group of complex disorders that share common characteristics.  Difficulty with communication, social and emotional functioning,  and fixated interests and repetitive behaviors are some of these characteristics.

Nearly one in every 110 children has ASD and boys are four or five times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with autism.  ASD can be difficult to treat because it is often associated with other disorders like:ures of Autistic Disorder

Rett’s Disorder: Only diagnosed in females and characterized by a pattern of head growth deceleration, poor coordination and gait movements.

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder: Distinctive pattern of developmental regression following two years of previously-obtained motor, language and social skills.

Asperger’s Disorder: Distinguished from Autism by lack of language development.
